2023 C’River Guber Election: Sandy Onor, Gershom Bassey forges alliance; Ayade insist on Southern candidate

Ahead of the 2023 Governorship elections in Cross River State and the controversy burdening the Calabar-Ogoja zoning principle, efforts are made by gladiators and their supporters to forge a political alliance that will brighten their chances of being elected governor in next years election.

Report, though still in contention at the moment has it that Senators Gershom Bassey and (Prof.) Sandy Onor, both contenders for the governorship ticket under the PDP platform may be close to a truce of sharing the offices of the governor and the deputy governor.

The proposition reported to have emanated from a closed-door meeting with stakeholders from Cross River State at the residence of the former governor, Senator Liyel Imoke in Abuja over the weekend had in attendance former Cross River Governor Donald Duke, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Senator Gershom Bassey, Prof. Sandy Onor and the Cross River State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Venatius Ikem.

The initial plan of the meeting was called to address the division in the party exacerbated by the zoning arguments and counter-arguments as well as the pronouncement by the party in the State that intending candidates from any of the Senatorial zones can vie for the coveted office.

Meanwhile, Governor Ben Ayade in a recent chat with newsmen at the Governor’s office in Calabar has reiterated his resolve to hand over power to a Southern candidate in 2023.

According to him, the timely intervention of proponents of the Calabar-Ogoja accord and the decline by eminent persons from the Southern Senatorial District to contest against him in 2019 contrary to the attacks from the Central Zone, is his reason to compensate them for the gesture.

However, the DG of Senator (Prof.) Sandy Onor, Mr. Joe Obi has debunked the development via a social media statement, while the Campaign DG of Senator Gershom Bassey, Hon. (Barr.) Asuquo Ekpo Ada has described the stories as a ploy to compromise his principal’s position and cast aspersion on his integrity. He condemned the stories in their entirety.

It would be recalled that Senator Gershom Bassey is the last man standing in the ‘three-wise-men gang’ to govern Cross River State.
