2023 LG Election: Cross River local council elections postponed

Cross River Independent Electoral Commission – CROSIEC- has announced a new date for the 2023 Local council elections earlier fixed for May 24, 2023. The rescheduled date is October 21, 2023.

In a press statement issued by CROSIEC chairman, Associate Professor Mike Ushie on Tuesday, September 27, said the postponement is due to budgetary concerns as the approved 2023 Local Government Council polls are captured in 2023 Appropriation with no supplementary provision in the 2022 budget.

The commission explained that the action was in line with section 24(2) of the 2022 Electoral Act and political parties are to sign and collect the rescheduled timetable at its headquarters in Calabar as the guidelines remain unchanged.

The development revealed that the 18 Local Government Areas in the State will have some caretaker committees in place after the current council chairmen, chairperson, and councilors’ tenure would have elapsed on midnight of June 1, 2023.
