2023 Presidency: Obi emerges Labour Party’s candidate; Ndigbo in Cross River supports choice

A former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has picked the presidential ticket of the Labour Party, after being endorsed by Pat Utomi another presidential aspirant on the platform of the party.

Obi left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) last week, blaming recent developments in the party for his defection.

Obi was the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election.

And following this feat, Igbo indigenes in Cross River have applauded his choice and called for support from all lovers of democracy to facilitate his dreams of repositioning the country in 2023.

A pharmacist and prominent Igbo indigene in Calabar, Mr. Moses Onyekachukwu made the plea on Monday in a chat with LENS Reporter. He said since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) schemed him out from honestly contesting for the party’s presidential ticket and the ruling party was unlikely to field a candidate of Igbo extraction from the South East.

He opined that since Peter Obi has an anecdotal link with Akwa Ibom and by inference the South-South geo-political zone, their support and that of the zone which shall produce Peter Obi’s running mate would change the game in his favour.

He called for synergy between the Labour Party, APGA and YPP which according to him has the interest of the Igbos to forge a common front to attain the dream of having a candidate of Igbo extraction as president in 2023. This he said would address the abnormally of many years of marginalization.

Earlier, the Eze Ndigbo in Cross River State, Sir Emmanuel Ezewenyi had called for zoning of the presidential ticket by all the political parties to the South East to heal the wounds inflicted in the hearts of Ndigbo and Igbo race by successive administrations in the country. He had suggested restructuring of the polity to give the South East their pride of place in the spirit of fair play and equity which in his estimation would impact the peace and progress of the nation.
