2025 World Environment Day: Cross River environment commissioner harps on proper disposal of plastic wastes in line with theme “Combating Plastic Pollution”, others

As a precursor to celebration of 2025 World Environment Day with theme: “Combating Plastic Pollution,” the Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi has harped on the need for proper disposal of plastic wastes to reduce plastic pollution and its resulting harmful effects on the environment and health of humans particularly micro-plastics in soils, food, water and living organisms.

Hon. Moses Osogi who doubles as Deputy Chairman of Nigeria Environment Commissioners and emerged 3rd position in rating of members of Cross River State Executive Council recently, used the occasion while fielding questions from newsmen after Saturday’s May 31st monthly sanitation exercise to allude that already a planning committee has been setup to replicate the event in the State.

The UNEP – UN Environment Programme emphasizes the importance of ending plastic pollution as an addition to the Sustainable Development Goals which has climate action, sustainable production and consumption as well as protecting oceans and biodiversity.

The Republic of Korea is the host of the global environment day celebration scheduled for June 5th 2025.

Meanwhile, the environment commissioner while rating compliance in last Saturday’s sanitation exercise as high and impressive, has scored the University of Calabar low in the last May 31st monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

He averred that the University of Calabar has fallen short in its environmental practices and described the sanitary condition of the University as appalling.

This was his assessment at the end of Saturday’s environmental sanitation exercise, during which he visited the school and other parts of Calabar where he called for the enforcement of sanitation law against violators

He as well-expressed worry about the unhygienic state of the students’ quartering on campus.

He declared that the state government is willing to extend support to the institution to improve the living conditions for students.

“Despite the break we experienced last month due to the JAMB examination, I am pleased to see that resident, particularly those in the metropolis, have shown commendable compliance,” the commissioner said.

And reacting to the challenges of waste management in the state, the commissioner expressed gratitude to the Waste Intervention Initiative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for donating waste bins to the ministry to aid disposal of waste in the State.

He charged residents in need of receptacles to apply for the bins as they are meant for the benefit of the public.
