6th EU-AU Summit: Leaders of AU suspended countries to miss gathering

Leaders from countries that have been suspended from the African Union will not attend the two days African Union-European Union Summit set to begin today in Brussels.

Organizers expect some 40 African Heads of State and Government to attend the Summit, but Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, all of which have been suspended from the bloc due to forceful military takeovers of government, will not have representation.

According to the EU, the summit will present a unique opportunity to lay the foundations for a renewed and deeper AU-EU partnership with the highest political involvement based on trust and a clear understanding of mutual interests.

Leaders are expected to discuss how both continents can build greater prosperity.

The 2022 Summit aims to launch an ambitious Africa-Europe Investment Package, taking into account global challenges like climate change and the current health crisis caused by Covid -19 pandemic.

The congregation of leaders from both blocs is also expected to hold deliberations on tools and solutions to promote stability and security through a renewed peace and security architecture.

And during the event, a series of thematic roundtables will also be organized as a complementary effort. A joint declaration of the agreed vision for 2030 is expected to be adopted by the participants to seal the talk.
