Agunbiade scales tournament to become number 1 tennis player in Calabar

The winner of the annual exciting and entertaining tennis tournament of the 123 years Calabar sport club has emerged. He is Engineer Tunde Agunbiade from Oka Akoko in Ondo State.

The 50-year-old Engineer Tunde Agunbiade emerged in a tense and keenly contested final bout, trashing Efa Ojong in the first set by 6-4.

In the second set, Efa Ojong won the set in a tie break after a 6-6 and Efa Ojong won 6-4,6-7 and 6-2 respectively.

Mr. David Alobi Alobi, Captain, Calabar Tennis Club said the ranking tournament in court 1-3 players are graded according to their strength. He also said that the person who won the final in court 1 becomes the No 1 ranked player in the club, while the runner up in the grand finale is ranked No 2.

According to the captain “Court one has 16 players who vied for the top prize. Court two also has 16 players playing to gain promotion into court one. Those who came last in court one will be demoted to court 2. The two finalists in court 2 have been promoted to court one. The player who won in court 3 is promoted to court 2”.

The captain further said that the tennis section in the sport club is one of the finest recreational, social, and a place to keep the body fit and healthy in Calabar.

He commended the sponsors and organizers of the event and called on other sport lovers especially tennis to identify with the club in order to discover talents in the country for National and International competitions.

Alobi said that the tournament was part of the preparation to select players who will represent the club in next year’s Eastern Nigerian International Club (ENIC) for players in the South East, South-South regions of the country.

He lamented that tennis is not given due attention like football and advised prospective tennis players to avail themselves of the opportunity to train in the Calabar Sport club while calling on all levels of government to encourage tennis academy where talents will be nurtured. He called on parents to encourage their children in sports.

High point of the event was the presentation of awards and gifts to the players.
