Akwa Ibom state government has mobilized erosion control firm Nigerpet Structures, for quick fix of the erosion prone area along Nung Udoe – Eket road to save it from total collapse.
Speaking with newsmen during inspection of the erosion site Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, said the state government has intervened on 100 roads in the state .
Ibanga explained that the state government can not wait for ecological funds to intervene on some of the erosion sites in the state especially when it threaten lives of the citizens .
” Akwa Ibom state has many erosion sites because of its tropical location .But the state government has asked for funds from federal government to tackle the erosion menace and government can not wait for the federal government intervention funds .
” Since Akwa Ibom people are the beneficiaries, government has to take proactive steps to ensure that the road is done early to give access to the people , otherwise the affected communities would be cut off.
” This is part government issues that always come up . Thank God there is contingency provisions in the budget so that when things like this come up , we can handle it .”
Prof.Ibanga stated that the contractor became immediate choice for the emergency work considering their expertise in erosion control jobs in the state.
” Why we use Nigerpet is that they have the expertise for the project and the capacity to deliver on time ”
The Project Manager of Nigerpet, Mr Eric Ese, confirmed that the project would be completed within three weeks as government has mobilized them to site
” We hope to complete this work within three weeks all things being equal . Nothing can stop us from fullfiling our promise”, he said.
One of the residents at the affected area who identified herself as Sophia, said, “there was no sign of the erosion before we woke up one morning after a heavy rain about two months ago and saw the access road cut. Subsequent rains have caused the road to cut further and we are living in fear since that incident”.
