Akwa Ibom FRSC Sector Command to enforce use of speed limiting device

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the Command will enforce and ensure strict use of speed limiting devices during this yuletide season to avoid road crashes.

The Akwa Ibom Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr. Matthew Olonisaye, said this in an interview with newsmen in his office in Uyo Wednesday.

According to him, any commercial driver caught without installation of speed limiting device in his vehicle would be apprehended.

He reminded drivers that overspeeding was the major contributing factor of accidents and carnages on roads thus warning drivers against excessive speeding.

Olonisaye added that the command has put measures in place as well to ensure roads are free of gridlocks thereby impacting safety for road users.

He said all FRSC personnel would be mobilised for the purpose of traffic management during the yuletide, adding that all operational vehicles have been maintained to function optimally during the campaign.

“We are really concerned with commercial vehicles this time, if any commercial vehicle is caught without installing a speed limiting device, then we will do the needful. We will be very strict with commercial vehicles and it will be continuous enforcement.

“Don’t forget speed is the major contributing factor in fatality rate, so, we expect that drivers abide by the maximum speed limit. We have put measures in place to ensure the road is free of traffic gridlock and also safe for road users,” he said.

The sector commander said the command had earlier flagged off the ember months campaign to sensitise road users and create awareness reminding them of their roles while on the road.

He added that there would be strong visibility of personnel in strategic locations especially areas envisaged as flashpoints.

“Presently, we have put measures in place to ensure the road is free and all our operational vehicles have been well maintained and we are ready to put all our personnel on strategic locations, where we envisage that there will be any hiccups.

“Our visibility on the road has been well planned and we will be on the road to calm drivers and other road users and use subtle enforcement to ensure people do not involve in any road violations to allow free flow of traffic,” he said.

He said the command would establish a Help Area at Itu head bridge along Calabar-Itu road to assist drivers to calm down before they continue their journey.

Olonosaye reminded drivers that they were not expected to drive more than four hours in a stretch, without resting for 15 minutes to relax their bodies.
