Akwa Ibom NUJ urges DPR to investigate gas leaks; relocate gas plant

The Nigerian Union of journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council has called on the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to investigate the excessive gas leaks of EDSENS Energy Ultramodern Digital Gas Plant located at No. 85 Ikot Okoro Road, Abak, which occurred on January 1, 2025.

The union which described the incident as life-threatening having nearly led to gas explosion in the area, demanded the immediate relocation of the Gas Plant to a non-residential area for safety reasons having already breached the cite suitability requirement and other operational guidelines of the DPR.

This was part of a seven-point resolution reached during the Union’s congress held at its secretariat, along information drive in Uyo, the State capital.

The communique signed by Comrade James Akpan, Chairman; Communique Drafting Committee Secretary, Comrade Effanga Usen; Communique Drafting Committee Member, Comrade Victor Essang; Communique Drafting Committee State Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk; Comrade Dominic Akpan, State Secretary, NUJ.

  1. “Congress appreciated Governor Umo Eno for fulfilling his promise of completing the Auditorium project of the Union through the Interministerial Direct Labour Committee as the Contractor is set to commence work next week.”
  2. Congress also, received the new Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, who pledged to work with Journalists and called for support and collaboration with the media community. Congress, consequently assured him of their continued support.
  3. “Congress commended Governor Umo Eno and Senator Aniekan Bassey, who represents Uyo Senatorial District in the National Assembly for their support to the Union.
  4. “Also, Congress gave a thumbs up to the immediate past State Executive Council members for the harmonious working relationship with the Governor and especially commended the immediate past Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong on his stewardship to the Ministry and congratulated him on his graduation and award of MSc. in Leadership and Development by Kings College, London”.
  5. Congress resolved that the union while commending the efforts of Security Agencies in the State, and the contributions of the State Government in tackling insecurity, similarly called on the government to donate additional operational vehicles to the Police for prompt response to security issues.
  6. “Congress enjoins all members of the Union to attend the New Year Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 19.
