Anambra council chair mutes shelter for the elderly, vulnerable citizens

Chief Clem Aguiyi, Chairman,Transition Council, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra, said that provision of shelter for the elderly and venunerable people in the society will curb molestation of the weak.

Aguiyi said this in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Council of Anambra.

He said that based on the recent attack on 75 year old, Mrs Theresa Nwaokaka, by her 50 years old daughter, Mrs Ukamaka Udugbo, the council now plans to create a shelter centre.

Aguiyi said that a robust committee comprising of the community leaderships both men and women wings ,security personnel and major stakeholders will be formed.

He said that communities under the council namely Abagana, Enugwu-Ukwu, Nimo, Nwafia and Enugu Agidi would be engaged on the modalities.

Aguiyi referenced the July 15 video clips that went viral where a woman was seen beating and pouring water on an aged woman.

“My attention was drawn to the video clip by the community vigilante group who informed me that the incident happened in Abagana.

” At first sight it appears like a movie to me ,being under my jurisdiction i alerted the Divisional police Officer, SP Ifeanyi Umeh and requested for further information.

“When the police confirmed it to be true, i described the action as a taboo and launched ideas to provide short/ long term measure to guide against such actions in near future,,” he said.

He said that providing shelter centres in council area would increase the quality of care given to the elderly and venunerable people till a more sustainable actions are in sight.

” There are many elderly who are left on their own for care,they are under reported, with the shelter centre,we can bring them together and care for them.

He said, ” There are venunerable people solely neglected we can gather them with the support of wealthy people in communities of the council and care for them.”

Aguiyi said for the grass root government to be very effective and rewarding that basic amenities under any guise was needful for the people to breathe a new lease of life.

He said that individuals could be reached for this type of cooperate social responsibility as government alone cannot handle all the social responsibility to her people.

“Government should be creative while the public partners with them on its ideas to translate it to reality for the common good of poor in the society,”he said.
