Anti Corruption: NGO unveils website for Nigerians
The Inter-Religious Coalition for Anti Corruption in Nigeria (IRCACN) on Monday in Calabar, unveiled a website, www.reportmagomago.com designed for concerned Nigerians to report corruption issues across Nigeria.
The Co-coordinator of the Organization, Bishop Emmah Isong said the platform would assist Nigerians to report observed corrupt practices in their areas.
Speaking at an Engagement Workshop with Interfaith Groups and Local Communities on Anti-Corruption Messaging, he said that corruption was the bane of development in Nigeria.
According to him, the group, comprising of Religious Leaders (Christian and Muslim) and Traditional Institutions were out to educate Nigerians on the fight against corruption
“The Government is fighting corruption through media trials and that is why there have been no tangible results.
” We have observed that religious leaders and traditional institutions are closer to the people and they listen and obey them.
“So, we are in a better condition to engage the people in achieving a corrupt-free Nigeria, ” he said.
He described Nigerians as very intelligent people but lacking in integrity and morality.
In his contribution, the Commissioner for Transport in Cross River State, Mr Oqua Edet said the fight against corruption in Nigeria need a holistic approach
“We need to go beck to the basics in our education to teach morals at the Primary education level, ” he said.
He added that, both the traditional Institutions and religious leaders have contributed in elevating corruption in the society.
Edet accused traditional leaders of crowning alleged criminals as chiefs while church leaders give prominence to corrupt politicians.
Another participant, Prof. Eyo Itam, the Clan Head of Efut, Calabar South, said there was the need for the re-introduction of teaching and learning of History in Schools.
The traditional ruler said that, it would help the younger generation to know their roots and their culture.
“You have to know your past in order to plan for your future, ” he said.
