ASUU to appeal return to work order; Nans calls off plan to block Abuja/Kaduna Highways

The Academic Staff Union of Universities says it will appeal the court order asking its members to return to Work.

Chairman of the University of Abuja chapter of the union, Kasim Umar, disclosed this while reacting to the order by the National Industrial court in Abuja.

The Labour Leader said the National Executive Council of ASUU will meet to conclude modalities on the appeal process of the return to Work Order.

Meanwhile, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Ahmed Mohammed has advised the federal government to apply caution in handling the crisis with the union.

The Pro-Chancellor said a court order cannot resolve the crisis at hand.

His appeal is that both parties embrace dialogue in order to find a lasting solution to the strike, rather than resort to force.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called off the plan to obstruct vehicular traffic into Kaduna from Abuja to force the Federal Government to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The umbrella body of the students association on Tuesday circulated a memo concerning its plan to mobilise students to block the Kaduna-Abuja highway at the Gonin-Gora end of the highway on Wednesday.

Briefing journalists in Kaduna, Chairman NANS Task Force on the end ASUU strike, Dominic Philip, said the decision not to go ahead with the planned blockade of Abuja – Kaduna highway was arrived at after a series of meetings with security agencies and other important stakeholders within the State and beyond.
