At least 8 killed, 23 rescued in Lagos high rise building collapse

At least eight persons have been confirmed dead in a building collapse at 32 Ibadan Street, Ebute Meta area of LAGOS on Sunday

The affected building, a three-story is located at No. 38 Ibadan Street along Herbert Macaulay Way, came down on Sunday night burying some tenants under its rubble.

Emergency responders are on-site for search and rescue operations, but so far the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the deaths of eight people, including a mother and her child whose bodies were recovered from the rubble.

The agency said 23 people had been rescued by Monday morning, those are about seven children and sixteen adults.

Reports say nine of those rescued have been treated and discharged.

This is the second building to collapse in the same area, after another three-story structure went down on February 13, killing several people and injuring many others.

Recounting Sunday’s tragedy, witnesses said dozens were trapped in the rubble after the building went down at about 10:56 pm.

Another three-story building collapsed earlier in the Onike area of Yaba on February 13, resulting in several casualties after the developer of the project reportedly returned to the site despite a stop-work order on the structure.
