Calabar market women played football match for fun to mark birthday of first lady

A novelty football match among market women in Calabar metropolis was played at the UJ Esuene Stadium on Sunday, April 7 under floodlight by 7:00pm.

The game flagged off by her is one of the activities put in place to mark the diamond birthday anniversary of the First Lady of Cross River State, Rev. Mrs. Eyoawan Otu scheduled for Wednesday 10thApril, 2024.

Chairman of the organising committee, Etta Lawrence while briefing newsmen, said the football encounter was conceived to add glamour to the birthday event as well as to enable the market women unwind from their routine daily activities.

According to him” Our first lady is particular about the market women and always insist on featuring them in her engagements.

That is why we came up with this concept which is the first of its kind in our clime.

As a build up to the game, both teams have been training extensively for the match which is expected to unveil hidden talents from both sides. It is also intended to introduce our market women to the importance of keeping fit as a way of letting off steam from their normal monotonous schedule”.

The encounter is expected to be flagged off by the first lady and will be watched by dignitaries including the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu, members of the state House of Assembly, members of the state executive council as well as friends and well wishers of the governor’s wife.
