China FM condemns US call on UN members to back Taiwan, says Taiwan is part of China
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has condemned the United States for urging members of the United Nations to support Taiwan’s participation in the world body’s activities.
China’s foreign ministry says Wang issued a comment on Friday in Italy, where he will attend a summit meeting of the Group of 20 nations. His statement relates to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s appeal on Tuesday for UN members to support Taiwan.
Wang said in the statement that Taiwan is part of China’s territory, and this has become a common recognition in the international community.
He went on to say that countries that “willfully” pushed their overtures on the Taiwan issue would pay the price.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu is on his tour to Europe to strengthen ties with nations on the continent.
Wang said the US and other nations are trying to make a breakthrough in Taiwan issues but that such actions go counter to the commitments they made when establishing diplomatic relations with China.
