Confusion in Marian market as Council stops traders from selling on roadside

There was chaos yesterday in the popular Ika Ika Oqua market along Marian road as officials from the Calabar Municipal Council attempted to force some traders shading wares on the roadside near the market vicinity to discontinue. This led to fracas between the traders and some youths who cashed in on the confusion to cause mayhem and loot goods.

The effort by Lens reporter to get the Mayor of Calabar Municipality, Hon. Prince Effefiong Nta Eke to comment on the issue hit brick wall. But a revenue agent working for the market committee, a major earner for the Council, who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had no option than to force the traders out for abandoning the stalls to shade on the roadside.

But the traders say they cannot seize from displaying their wares on the roadside because the Council collect daily tolls from them.
