Consultant urges Nigerians to go into fish farming because of nutritional and high return on venture

A fish consultant, Mr. Daniel Ofuka has highlighted its nutritional value in the agricultural value chain of the nation’s economy.

Mr. Ofuka who is the author of many books on agriculture among which is “Use of Pesticides”, is a UK trained and former Curator at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Cross River State University of Technology, Obubra Campus.

He urged Nigerians to go into fish farming because there are diminishing returns already from fishes in rivers and other natural waters. The future according to him looks up to fish farming for high quality animal protein.

“The good news is that even the marine territorial waters of Nigeria with huge fish and shrimps’ resources are under exploited, hence if properly explored will be of great benefit and would address youth restiveness and create employment opportunities in the country.”

He therefore called on the State and Federal Government to provide affordable loans and grants to drive the establishment of fish ponds in the 744 local councils in the country.
