Corps member lauds Senator for sponsoring her and others through school

A Youth Corps member who recently completed her one-year statutory national service has commended Senator Bassey Akpan (OBA) for sponsoring her and hundreds of other students through multiple tertiary institutions in the country.

Miss Imeofon Oku, a graduate of Linguistics from the University of Uyo, who just completed the 2021 Batch B, stream 1 of the NYSC scheme, took to her Facebook page to eulogise the upper National Assembly member for his magnanimity.

In her words: “These special thanks go to Senator Bassey Albert Akpan whose scholarship scheme saw me through my undergraduate studies”.

Senator Akpan who is the senator representing Akwa Ibom North-East (Uyo) senatorial district, has been sponsoring over 480 brilliant, but indigent Akwa Ibom students in the tertiary institutions, since 2016.

Oku recalled how in 2016 during her sophomore year when she was facing financial difficulties with continuing her education, she came across a public notice that invited qualified students from Uyo senatorial district to apply for financial assistance under the ‘OBA Scholarship scheme’.

“Sometime in April 2016, on this platform I remember seeing the public notice calling on all qualified students from Uyo Senatorial District to apply for Sen. OBA scholarship scheme. It was just in time, in my second year when the going got tough”, she stated.

The excited young lady, who hails from Ibesikpo Asutan- one of the nine local government areas in the district, who uploaded her passing-out ceremony pictures, wrote: “Unlike other scholarship providers, Distinguished Sen. Bassey Albert did not see any course(s) as more important than others. He understood the importance of helping people achieve their academic goals irrespective of their choices- Arts or Sciences”.

She disclosed that apart from payment of her tuition fees, the Senator through the scheme was also paying her regular stipends to meet her needs while in school.

“I am happy to inform Distinguished Sen. Bassey Albert that I have bagged BA, Linguistics, courtesy of his benevolence. I want to thank him for meeting other needs by means of regular stipends, in addition to paying my tuition fees”.

She prayed: “The Lord God Almighty will bless you more and more. Amen”.

Many social commentators have over time lauded the scholarship scheme sponsored by Senator Bassey Akpan for its impact on the academic pursuits of the beneficiaries, describing it as a worthy investment in education and learning.

Miss Oku is one of the growing armies of beneficiaries of the now popular ‘OBA scholarship scheme’, also known as “OBA Scholars”.
