Court declares Jussie Smollett guilty of faking hate crime

A Chicago jury has found US actor, Jussie Smollett guilty after lying to the police that he was a victim of a racist, homophobic assault.

The 39-year-old movie star stood by denials that he staged the hoax attack against himself during the trial this week.

As he repeated what he said to Chicago police, prosecutors countered that he “lied for hours” while on the stand.

Sources have disclosed that he was found guilty on Thursday of five counts of disorderly conduct.

While experts have said a lighter sentence or probation is likely, it was also confirmed that each count carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, considering Smollett’s lack of previous convictions.

Meanwhile, a sentencing date has yet to be scheduled as the jury of six men and six women reached its decision one day after deliberations began.

Reminiscing the trial, nearly three years ago in January 2019, there was an account of an accident that triggered a trial in which the former Empire television show star told police he was the victim of an attack.

From the accident, it could also be recalled that Smollett, told police he was set upon by two assailants who shouted slurs, yelled a Trump slogan, dumped a “chemical substance” on him and tied a noose around his neck while he was walking late at night in Chicago.
