Court grants Emefiele N300m bail over procurement fraud
A High Court of the FCT in Maitama has granted bail in the sum of N300 million to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
The embattled Emefiele was arraigned before the court on Friday, November 17, on a six-count charge among which bordered on conferring corrupt advantage on a female staff member of the CBN, contrary to the process vision of Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.
Emefiele had pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him, the court adjourned to today to consider his bail application and remanded him last week at the Kuje Correctional Centre, depending on the determination of his bail.
In a ruling on Wednesday morning, Justice Hamza Muazu held that Emefiele should produce two sureties, who must have certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district of the FCT.
In addition, he must also tender his travel documents and not go outside of the Abuja Municipal Council.
Emefiele who has been in he Kuje correctional facility since Friday will not be let go until he meets the bail conditions.
Earlier, another FCT High Court had two weeks ago ordered his release in a fundamental human rights suit he instituted against the federal government.
The court adjourned till November 28 for the commencement of trial.
