Cross River government warns residents to adhere to scheduled time of refuse disposal in Calabar

The Cross River State Government has restated its regulations on refuse disposal in the state, especially within Calabar metropolis, warning residents to adhere to the designated disposal hours or face penalties.

According to the release by Ekpenyong Akiba, Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu on Special Duties, residents can only dispose refuse between 6:pm and 10:pm daily. He noted that enforcement agents have been recruited and will be stationed at strategic refuse points to ensure compliance.

Similarly, the government has imposed a total ban on refuse scavenging, citing serious security concerns. Perpetrators are warned to desist forthwith as security agents have been mandated to arrest and prosecute offenders.

The above statement collaborates the State Commissioner for Environment Hon. Moses Osogi’s directive over the time-frame for waste disposal by residents in the Calabar Metropolis and its environs and had appeal for weekly evacuation of refuse in the major markets in the early hours on Saturdays as precursor to the Calabar Carnival and Festival in 2024. He thanked all relevant government agencies for keeping the city of Calabar green and clean during and after Africa’s biggest street party and implored residents to prepare for the first state wide sanitation exercise on Saturday, January 25th 2025.
