Cross River Governor, stakeholders advocates restoration of lands during World Environment Day

Cross River State Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has appealed to organizations and individuals to make deliberate effort to restore the land from further degradation

Otu said this at an event Wednesday in Calabar to mark the 2024 World Environment Day themed “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought resilience under the slogan our land for future”.

Represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, the Governor said this year’s World Environment Day is apt as this year mark the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to combat desertification being the sixteenth session of the COP to the General Restoration impinges on the importance of the restoration of land, halting desertification and building resilience under the UN Charter on Environment.

June 5 every year is designated as World Environment Day established by the United Nations in 1972 and is the largest International Environment Convention. This year’s global celebration is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi in his speech acknowledged the rich resources in the State but stressed the need for protection of the eco-system.

In a chat with newsmen in Calabar, Osogi who is the deputy Chairman of Nigerian Commissioners for Environment elected at the 17th meeting of the National Council on Environment (NCF), harped on the theme of this year’s celebration which he said resonates appropriately with the current realities in the State and reiterated governments commitment in sustaining a clean and green environment in Cross River State. .

Earlier in the week, he had planted 5,000 trees along the Goodluck Jonathan by-pass in Calabar to protect the land from degradation.
