Cross River IPAC laments low voter turnout in presidential, Nat’l Assembly elections
Cross River Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has decried the low-voter turn-out during the February 25.2023 presidential and National Assembly elections in the State.
One of the knotty issues in their estimation was the few appointees of the State government that were engaged as INEC ad-hoc staff. Prior February 25 during a press conference in Calabar on Friday March 3, 2023 addressed by the state chairman Mr. Anthony Attah out of the over 1.7 million registered voters, only 444,880 were accredited to vote, representing less than 30% of voters in the state.
He disclosed that the previous elections in the State had about 700,000 accredited voters, reasoning that the number should not be dwindling but increasing. He thanked residents of Cross River State for coming out to vote during the election but expressed dissatisfaction with the number as they are expecting to see at least 1.2 million voter turnouts in the forthcoming governorship and State Assembly elections.
In his contribution, the Governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement, NRM, Mr. Patrick Solomon, “PATSOL” said that some election results remained questionable because several political parties were aggrieved with the process and have resolved to take legal actions to reclaim their mandates.
Mr. Attah called on the military formations in the State to deploy massively personnel in the three Senatorial districts to curtail electoral violence and ensure a smooth and peaceful conduct of the exercise.
