President of National Council of Women Society, Nigeria, (NCWS) Rt. Hon. Chief Majorie Asuquo has briefed Journalist in Calabar on Thursday, March 13th 2025 on the weeklong activities to mark 2025 International Women’s Day Celebration amidst reservation on the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan’s for six months by the Senate.

The women group though were of the opinion that her suspension from the Senate has further depleted the already paltry four number of women representatives out of the 109 in the 10th Senate thereby exacerbating women marginalization in Nigeria.

In her contribution at the media parley, the pioneer President of NCWS in the State, Rev. Grace Ekanem said the wide disparity in the distribution of political appointments in the country is against the Biejing 1995 convention declaration.

Ekanem harped on the importance of girl-child education, advising against denying them opportunities. She said, “Parents should emphasize education of their children first before talking about marriages, contending that with good education, the women can help out the husbands, build homes and society.”

This year’s theme of International Women Day Celebration – “Accelerated Action” is apt according to Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Cross River State Chapter Chair, Comrade Archibong Bassey, the first female to lead the State who dared women to leverage on the need to compete with their men folks to achieve equity, equality and inclusiveness for an egalitarian society.
