Cross River PDP berates composition of state Independent Electoral Commission
A press release issued by the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP Mr. Mike Ojisi Sunday, August 18 in Calabar says The Peoples Democratic Party disapproves the nomination of All Progressives Congress (APC) card carrying members by Governor Bassey Edet Otu to serve in Cross River state Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC).
Ojisi who claimed that the nominees for the electoral umpire task will not be apolitical in carrying-out their functions, called for a rethink by the Governor in their nomination which is subject to confirmation by the Cross River State House of Assembly.
Those affected are Dr. Eyo Otu Eyo from Odukpani Local Government Area and Butendala Eno from Yakurr Local Government Area in the Ekong Ed m,/ m et Boco led list.
It would be recalled that Governor Senator Prince Edet Otu had dissolved the Dr. Mike Ushie led CROSIEC for their inability to conduct local government elections since the end of the last local government administration in June 2023 which left the administration with HOLGA as place-holders.
This development warranted the need to constitute a new CROSIEC Board to conduct elections to fill the vacant positions. Also, the recent Supreme Court ruling which grants financial autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas has necessitated their convocation to to enable the council benefit from the nascent arrangement.
