Cross River Police Command read riot act to election violators

As activities for the 2023 general elections kick in, the Cross River State police command has declared “’EYE FOR AN EYE” slogan to counter plans, by-election interlopers, to cause trouble and recede the smooth conduct of the exercise.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Nigerian Police Force Cross River State command spokesperson Superintendent of Police Irene Ugbo during a phone-in programme “ PEOPLES OPINION” on FAD 93.1 FM in Calabar where she issued the warning on Wednesday.

Asked to comment on the circumstance that led to the killing of ward 7 youth-led in Calabar South Local Government Area by trigger happy police officer at Calabar South/ Akpabuyo/ Bakassi APC National Assembly primaries in Cultural Centre Complex said the person whose activities often times are questionable need to operate that way due to the hardened criminals they interface with.

She said that Mr. Emmanuel Bassey who was allegedly killed by an officer of Anti – Cultism / Kidnapping Squad was shot in a gun duel with the personnel, disclosing that the victim came with a pistol and some charms were round all over his body and shot at the police which in the process of retaliation the bullet hit him in the chest.

And speaking further, she said that the Anti-Cultism / Kidnapping Squad is a special unit distinct from the conventional police regiment or the mobile police formation to deal with criminals who wield cutlasses, daggers, guns among other dangerous weapons to foment trouble thereby disturbing the peace of the society. The unit she said was strengthened by absorbing officers of the disbanded Special Anti- robbery Squad “ SARS” following the End SARS riot.

Irene Ugbo urged police officers to do the needful whenever they are confronted adding that 2023 general and local council elections will be an “EYE –FOR- AN EYE”.
