Cross River SEMA DG urges government to rejuvenate grass root sports
Director General of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Rev. (Dr.) James Anam has advocated for deliberate effort by the Cross River State Government to revive grass-root sports development by encouraging primary schools inter-house sports activities as a strategy to discover professionals who will represent the state and country in global competitions.
Anam gave the charge during the 10th annual inter-house sport event held in Calabar on Thursday March 14, 2024.
Represented by his Special Adviser (SA), Elder Francis Effiom, disclosed “The Sports Sector is one key vast area that captures varying interest and makes desirable impact in the lives of individuals and nations and the place of catching them young in primary school inter-house activities is ideal. Government, he said should use every possible means to enhance grass roots sporting activities at the primary school level to uncover talents which will bring glory to Nigeria by their outstanding performance in future”.
Also contributing, Executive Secretary, Calabar Municipal Council Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Offiong D. Effiong said the importance of grassroots sporting activities cannot be over-emphasized as it ranges from physical fitness to well-being since professionals and amature sports men and women all started from participating in sports from primary schools, before they got to where they are today.
The Head Teacher of Government Primary School, Ediba road, Calabar and host called for encouragement to all the pupils in primary school inter-house sporting activities because it can bring glory to the state and nation as well as put food on tables of athletes in future
In the over-all result presented by the Parent Teachers Association – PTA Chairman, Evangelist Emmanuel Archibong, Red House took First position with 220 points, Green House 2nd position with 192 points, Blue House 3rd position with 180 points, Purple House 4th position with 140 points and yellow House 5th position with 130 points respectively at the event.
An old pupil of the school and APC party stalwart, Elder Comrade Iso Bassey Edim assisted by his (1988-1994) class-mate, Apostle Christopher Ben Akpan presented prizes to the participants while the Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs. N. A. Oqua thanked all invited guests for finding time to grace the occasion despite their busy schedule.
Government Primary School, Ediba Road, Calabar has produced many dignitaries who have contributed to the development of the society among whom are Director General (DG) of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Rev. (Dr.) James Anam and Rt. Hon. Efa Esua former member who represented Calabar Municipal State Constituency in Cross River State House of Assembly.
