CRSG takes retired AIG to Court over alleged murder

The Cross River State Government has charged former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Joseph Mbu (retired) before the State High Court for alleged murder of one late Ayuk Etta Ngon.

This follows a petition to the State Attorney General’s Office asking it to look into the role played by the retired Police Officer during the incident that led to the death of the deceased at Bendeghe in Etung Local Government Area of the state on the 24th December 2018.

The charge sheet was signed by the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), F I Ititim, no: HC/40C/2021 dated 16/6/2021, by the Attorney General of Cross River State.

According to the DPP, the AIG (retired) was charged with murder “contrary to section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap C16, Vol. 3 Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria 2004.

“Mbu Joseph Mbu on the 24th of December, 2018 along Ndung Stream road Bendeghe Ekiem, Etung killed one Ayuk Etta Ngon, ” he said.

No date has been fixed for hearing.

It would be recalled that the Petitioners, Mr Etta Takon and Ngon Neji had earlier also written to the panel on Police Brutality over the same matter requesting for the prosecution of the retired AIG and to compel him to release the corps of the deceased for proper burial.

The panel granted the second request and ordered that the body of late Ngon be released by Mbu for proper interment by the family.

However, that was yet to be done before the present action by the State Government.
