Democratic incumbent Warnock wins Senate runoff in Georgia

In the United States, the Democratic incumbent has won Tuesday’s Senate runoff in the state of Georgia. The result is a setback for former President Donald Trump, who had backed the Republican candidate.

The race in Georgia came to a runoff after none of the candidates won the required majority of votes in last month’s midterm elections.

The Associated Press reported that Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock kept his seat, fending off his Republican challenger, former football star Herschel Walker.

Warnock’s win gives the Democrats 51 seats in the 100-seat Senate, and the Republicans 49.

The Democrats already controlled the Senate, as Vice President Kamala Harris is authorized to cast a tie-breaking vote as the chamber’s president.

But for the Democratic administration of President Joe Biden, the more Senate seats, the better.

Meanwhile, Walker’s loss casts doubt on Trump’s power to rally the Republicans, as many of the candidates the former president backed lost in the midterms.

ABC News reported that in the House of Representatives, the Republicans are set to take 222 seats and the Democrats 213 seats.
