Edo Assembly suspends three members on alleged impeachment plot amidst uproar
The Edo State House of Assembly have suspended three members on Monday over allegations of plot to impeach the leadership.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku announced the indefinite suspension during a rowdy plenary session.
One of the suspended members, Hon. Bright Iyamu, Orhionmwion South Constituency representative was said to have been captured on CCTV performing what the speaker described as fetish sacrifices at the House of Assembly Complex last Thursday.
The relics of cola nut and other substances used in the ritual according to the speaker, is suggestive of ulterior motives for the impeachment.
Earlier before plenary on Monday, it was also disclosed that 14 members had appended their signatures to impeach the speaker, a move that was disrupted during plenary.
Other suspended members are Hon. Isibor Emankhu Addeh representing Esan North East Constituency 1 and Hon. Donald Okogbe representing Akoko Edo Constituency 2.
However, the suspension sparked uproar, with Hon. Addeh Emankhu Isibor resisting the pronouncement and other members voicing dissent.
The plenary was adjourned to Tuesday, May 7, 2024, amid the tension.
The incident has raised concerns about the sanctity of the House and the motivations behind the alleged impeachment plot as the 2024 gubernatorial election is near.
