Efut nation begins Coronation Rituals of new Muri Munene in Calabar
The people of Efut nation of Calabar South in Cross River State have rolled out activities for the burial rite of the late Muri Munene Effiong Okokon Mbukpa Eta Odionka Ebuka VII, Muri Maurice Okon Eyo Muri Munene – elect and clan head of Efut Akwa Ikot Ekpe Kingdom in Calabar South Local Government Area.
The secretary general Efut Combined Assembly, Ndaba Godwin Bassey said on Thursday that the traditional institution of Efut nation from Bakassi to Odukpani Local Government gathered to crown the head of their institution.
Speaking, he said: “since the Muri Munene Okon Eyo 1 has been made the head of their shrine in accordance with the tradition and customs of the Efut Nation, he automatically becomes their leader.
“It has been a very long journey gradually from Efe Asibong Ekondo and back to Efe Ntinya.
“The ritual is one of the major pre-requisite for a qualified Muri to be made Muri Munene and Maurice Okon Eyo 1 has fulfilled all the qualifications required”.
Muri Munene- elect and Clan head of Efut Akwa Ikot Ekpe Kindom, Muri Maurice Okon Eyo 1 described the ceremony as peaceful.
He said the large turnout signifies love and acceptance. What you have seen here today is an expression of appreciation of love and acceptance by the people of Efut.Nation.
“I accepted because I am the rightful person to occupy the throne of Muri Munene of Efut and chairman, Calabar South Traditional Ruler Council and this has been declared today.”
He commended the people for turning out in large number for the ceremony and urged them to remain calm and peaceful, adding that it is only God that enthrone kings, the right thing will ultimately be done.
The ceremony was attended by Muris of Efut nation in Bakassi, Akpabuyo, Calabar Municipality and Odukpani Local Government Areas and featured the initiation of over 30 boys and men into the Mgbe Society, as well as traditional displays.
