Environment commissioner assures residents of prompt government response to Ekorinim 1 flooding
The Cross River State Commissioner of Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi in aligning with the Peoples First Mantra of Governor Bassey Otu, has promised to take proactive measure to address the threat to property and humans by flood from Parliamentary village in Ekorinim I, Calabar.
While fielding questions from a LENS Reporter in his office in Calabar, Osogi said his attention has been drawn to the menace of flooding in Ekorinim 1 through a petition to his office by a victim, Mr. Dickson Kanu Obo whose farm and properties have been ravaged by flood water emanating from the Cross River State House of Assembly quarters due to blockage of the drain that channels heavy current of water to Prof. Ene Obong Crescent, Ekorinim I, in Calabar Municipal Council Area. He promised on Tuesday June 11 to liaise with Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem and relevant government agencies to resolve the problem and appealed for calm from all aggrieved persons in the vicinity.
Earlier, Mr. Dickson Kanu Obo had petitioned the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Environment to come to their aid to address the environmental hazard.
In another development, the Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi has expressed willingness to partner with Environmental Monitoring and Energy Research Group-Africa (EMERGA) on air quality monitoring in the state.
Hon. Osogi who doubles as Deputy Chairman of Nigeria Environment Commissioners stressed this in Calabar when members of the Organisation visited him noting that his ministry is committed to assisting private and Non-Governmental Organisations to carry out activities that will enhance habitable environment for citizens. He assured the group of his full support while acknowledging the importance of air as the most important requirement of life.
In his remark, the Director and Group Leader of Environmental Monitoring and Energy Research Group-Africa, Prof. Ewona Igwe acknowledged the existence of Universities in providing solutions to human challenges and needs, disclosing that the group is made-up of researchers with multi-disciplinary composition focusing extensively on air pollution. He hinted that the group’s inter interest in partnering with the ministry is a vanguard against environmental abuse.
