FG closes 22 Illegal Colleges of Education in Nigeria

The Federal Government, through the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), has uncovered and shut down 22 illegal colleges of education operating across the country.

This move followed a nationwide crackdown on unapproved institutions operating without accreditation. According to a document detailing the commission’s recent achievements, the NCCE also carried out personnel and financial audits in all 21 federal colleges of education.

Recall President Bola Tinubu had during the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria, earlier charged key regulatory agencies—NUC, NBTE, and NCCE—to eliminate illegal tertiary institutions and curb the rise of “certificate millers” threatening the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.

The National Commission for Colleges of Education warned parents and prospective students to verify the accreditation status of any college of education before enrollment, stressing that certificates obtained from illegal institutions remain invalid.
