FG urges States to domesticate law protecting persons with disabilities

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster management, and social development have urged state Directors responsible for Persons living with disabilities across the country to domesticate the law against the Discrimination of Persons with Disabilities for effective Service Delivery.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Nasiru Gwarzo disclosed this in Abuja at the Annual Conference of Directors responsible for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria

Persons living with Disabilities are oftentimes vulnerable and susceptible to factors such as Societal Discrimination as well as environmental barriers which infringe on their rights and access to essential services.

In 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Discrimination Against persons with Disability Prohibition Act, which provides for the full integration of persons with Disabilities into society and promotes their Rights to Equal opportunities.

At this Annual Conference for Directors Responsible for the Rehabilitation of persons with Disabilities in Nigeria, stakeholders strongly emphasize the need to domesticate the Act in every state for effective Service Delivery to all persons with Disability.

The Conference features current and emerging issues affecting the survival and care of persons with disabilities and strives to chart a way forward to enable effective service Delivery to improve their quality of life

The Humanitarian Ministry assures that it will continue with its conscious efforts towards addressing issues that relate to persons with Disabilities in Nigeria for overall National Development
