Fire guts Kogi House of Assembly complex in Lokoja

The Kogi state House of Assembly complex has been gutted by fire, razing the assembly gallery completely.

The cause of the fire incident is unknown as of now but the inferno has abated as of the time of filing this report.

Jerry Omodara, the special adviser on security to the Kogi state governor, who was at the scene, refused to speak with journalists on the possible cause of the fire.

Salau Ozigi, Director of the Kogi Fire Service, said the fire did not extend beyond the chamber and gallery of the assembly complex.

The Speaker of the House, Prince Mathew Kolawole, while speaking to journalists at the assembly complex said the House will allow security agencies to investigate the incident.

Kolawole said the fire will not affect the sitting of the assembly, noting that the mace was not destroyed.

“We got a call this morning from our people here. We are leaving the security people here to do their job,” he said.

“This does not affect the sitting. The mace is not affected and we can actually sit anywhere and conduct our legislative activities.”

The speaker added that security operatives will investigate the incident to unravel the cause.
