Former National Assembly lawmaker accused of battery by spouse
The wife of a former Member Representing Oron, Mbo, Ure-Offiong/Oruko, and Udung – Uko Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the 7th Assembly Mrs. Kezia Robinson has in a press conference on Wednesday in Calabar narrated in tears how she has been mistreated and domestically violated by her husband Hon. Robinson Uwak.
She said, “I have been systematically isolated from my siblings, friends, and family” and narrated how in December 2021, her husband invited her parents to their home in Abuja and in January stopped her from resuming a job appointment, seized her phone, and threatened her parents while brandishing a machete. According to her, he threw her parents out of the house at 2: am after she failed to make indomie noodles and egg for him upon fearing leaving the house without his permission.
She revealed that when she reported her ordeal to NAPTIP, she was gaslighted to go back to him but only for him to resume his abuse.
After an attempt to escape, Robinson tracked her to the airport, checked the manifest to see the plane that had already left and called the AIR PEACE office in Calabar telling them there are kidnappers on the flight with his wife and children on board requesting that the plane lands should be grounded. But her name and that of their children were not in the manifest.
According to her, he checked Ibom Air as the plane just landed and passengers alighting while she and the children were getting ready to board when he came accompanied by the Army and Policemen who arrested her and Mr. Jossy Oku, an old acquaintance whom she met at the airport and asked to help her carry one of her kids alleging they are kidnappers.
Kezia, 27 disclosed that Robinson never truly divorced his ex-wife and when she tried digging deep he strangled her and almost killed her, and vowed to go to jail while his hands were on her neck.
She said he has vowed to kill her parents but promised to spare her sister because she doesn’t know anything about the situation.
She premised her speaking out on this threat because according to her the estranged husband is capable of carrying out his threats and society should hold him responsible if anything happens to her and her family.
Reacting to Kezia’s tears at the press briefing, the Founder and Executive Director of Project Alert, Mrs. Josephine Efa-Chukwuma said the situation is appalling as just recently in Calabar over 50 female judges from the six South-South states met over violence against women with the theme: “Violence Against Women,” and promised to make statements through their ruling that will send out a strong message against it.
Responding, Barr. James Ibor, Principal Counsel of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative said they are ready to push back and assured that Hon. Robinson Uwak, no matter how influential he is in the society will not get away with this heinous act.
