FRSC Cross River commissions zebra-crossing initiated by Corps members

Mrs. Elizabeth Akinlade, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Cross River Command on Friday said the command would punish any motorist in the State who violates road traffic rules.

She said this while commissioning a zebra-crossing along Murtala Mohammed Highway by NYSC Secondary School Calabar put together by the outgoing 2021 Batch C, Corps members, FRSC group as part of their CDS project.

She lauded the Corps members for their initiative as well as the FRSC Special Marshals for guiding them to the completion of the project.

Akinlade added that the marking of the road signs was for the safety of other road users.

“I must commend this initiative of yours. I must also commend the FRSC special marshals who guided the Corps members on this project.

“The essence of road marking is to reduce speed when approaching zebra-crossing, to allow other road users to cross the road.

“I pray that motorists should be conscious of these markings and reduce speed to allow students to cross without hindrance.

“There are sanctions for those who fail to obey road signs, we will make them face the law, ” she said.

The sector Commander advised Nigerians to always obey road signs as this would go a long way to saving lives.

She further stressed the need for vehicle owners to do proper checks on their vehicles every morning before entering the road to curb any eventuality.

Speaking, the Assistant Director, Human Resources, NYSC in Cross River Mr. Abel Udofia commended the Corps members for the project.

“This is very wonderful, we appreciate their effort, ” he said.

The Vice-Principal of NYSC Secondary School, Mrs. Etta Bassey thanked the Corps members for coming to their rescue.

She said though they have not recorded any ugly incident, it was always hectic and frightening when students have to queue for several minutes waiting for vehicles to pass before they crossed to the other side of the road.

“It is a welcome development, very timely and important. I think the government should have zebra-crossing in all schools for the safety of the children,” she said.

The leader of the CDS group, Mr. Uduonu Promise said they were moved by the sufferings the students were passing through after school hours.

“We noticed that the students of the College find it difficult crossing over to the other side of the road because motorists don’t slow down for them to cross.

“So we felt it is necessary to contribute our own quota in easing their frustrations, ” he said.
