Garba Shehu Says Obasanjo is Nigeria’s Divider-in-Chief

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Garba Shehu has in his statement issued on Sunday described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as divider in chief given his most recent outburst on the incumbent Buhari led government. He accused Obasanjo of attempting to divide the nation whereas President Muhammadu Buhari is promoting nation-building and the unity of the country.

Shehu said that before responding further to what he described as the unfair attacks on President Buhari and his administration by Obasanjo, it is important to state that contrary to the extreme assertions in some quarters, the recent speech in which President Buhari advised West African Presidents against tenure elongation beyond constitutional limits has been consistent with his long held views on the need to adhere to the rule of law.

He maintained that even though he tried it and failed, the recent spike in the number of such leaders and those actually carrying on in office beyond term limits is sufficient to cause concern among democrats in the sub-region given its prospects of destabilizing the states and the region.

The media aid averred that the President’s support for democratic institutions is consistent with his principles which is in line with the current policies of his administration and that of the ECOWAS Charter which is that term limits must be respected and change of government is only allowed through the ballot box.

He then appealed to former President Obasanjo to sheath the sword and rest the posing about the Messiah that has misled him to pronounce often wrongly, as he disastrously did in the 2019 elections, about the life and death of Nigerian governments.
