Governor Bassey Otu commended for plan to relocate Lemna dump site in Calabar
The timely visit to the Lemna waste Dumpsite in Calabar and promise to relocate it by Cross River State Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu has received commendation from the former Deputy Governorship Candidate of National Rescue Movement (NRM) in the March 18, 2023 general election Mr. Mathias Amgbah.
Amgbah made the remark in a telephone conversation with LENS Reporter on Monday 5th June while comemoraing the World Environmental Day in Calabar.
He thanked Governor Bassey Otu for visiting the place two weeks plus after the published ICIR Funded investigation revealed large-scale procurement violations in contracts awarded in 2020.
The investigation revealed that the contract to manage the dump site and eleven other projects valued at over 600 million was awarded to nine unregistered companies that are not recognized under the Cross River State Procurement Law, 2020 (Law No. 9). Otu vowed to relocate the dump site to keep Calabar clean and green to impact tourism in consonance with the theme for the 2023 World Environmental Day #Beat Plastic Pollution Campaign “Ecosystem Restoration”.
The 2023 World Environmental Day kicked off in the host country Cote d’Ivoire as millions of people prepare for the activities across the world, Nigeria inclusive.
World Environmental Day is designed to create awareness and action for protecting the environment and is celebrated on June 5, of every year with over 143 countries participating
It is supported by many non-governmental organizations (NGO), businesses, government entities and represents the United Nations outreach day supporting the environmental official name UN World Environmental Day (WED), World Environment Day with International plan to observe Environment protection and significance on Environment issues awareness.
World Environmental Day has been celebrated since 50yrs ago on June 5, 1973 and has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues like marine pollution, over population, global warning, sustainable development and wild life crime.
Each year, the programme provides a theme and forum for NGOs, government, communities and celebrities to advocate environmental causes as highlighted by the UN at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment on 5-16 June 1972. One year later in 1973 the first WED was held with the Theme; “Only one Earth”.
