INEC Primary Election: 18 Political Parties seek 37-day extension; Election timetable, timeline will not be reviewed, INEC declares

The Inter-Party Advisory Council IPAC has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to reconsider its electoral timelines and shift the June 3 deadline for the conduct of primary elections by the parties.

The council which is an umbrella body for Nigeria’s 18 registered political parties is asking the electoral umpire to adjust the deadline by 37 days.

IPAC National Chairman, Sani Yabagi made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja at the INEC’s interactive session with political parties.

In his response, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed that the timetable and timeline of elections will not be reviewed.

The INEC chairman also added that political parties should conduct primaries in a transparent manner. In addition, he said that the commission received 807 litigations in 2019, due to the process surrounding party primaries.
