INEC wants Police to investigate, prosecute Adamawa REC; collation of results in progress

The Independent National Electoral Commission has disclosed that the Returning Officer in the Adamawa State governorship election will announce the resumption of the collation which is already on going at the collation centre in Yola the state capital.

The Commission disclosed this at the end of a meeting held over the controversial decision of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Abuja.

The Commission at the end of the meeting in Abuja also called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately commence an investigation and possible prosecution of the activities of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Hudu Yunusa Ari.

The Commission added that it will inform the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as the appointing authority to draw attention to the unwholesome practices and activities of the suspended REC for further action.

The statement read: At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:
1. Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
2. Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
3. The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.

Reactions have been trailing the controversial declaration of Aisha Binani Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress as winner of the Adamawa State gubernatorial election before the collation of results in the state were concluded.

On Sunday, social media was awash with reactions after a video showing Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the resident electoral commissioner made the declaration to the dismay of opposition agents.

Following the announcement, the APC governorship candidate, delivered an acceptance speech while crowds of supporters trooped out to congratulate the illegally declared winner. Spokespersons of the All Progressives Congress, Festus Keyamo also congratulated Binani after the declaration. Keyamo took to his official Twitter page to describe Aisha’s victory as a glass-shattering watershed for Nigerian women.

The INEC Rec, Hudu Yunusa Ari is reported to have been paid huge sums of money to rig the gubernatorial election in Adamawa state.

In a video that made the rounds on social media on Sunday, an alleged Senior DSS official who was apprehended by some young people at CITY GREEN HOTELS in Yola, stated that he was told to give the Rec about 2 billion Naira to Rig the election.
