Inmates at Jos correctional centre revolted over reduced food ration announcement
Inmates at the Jos Correctional Center have revolted against the announcement that their usual meals will be reduced following the high cost of food items in the country.
It took the combined effort of the armed squad of the command who shot sporadically in air to return the inmates to their various cells.
Residents within the Jos Command of the Correctional service community in Jos were thrown into panic mode following the sound of sporadic gunshots from the correctional facility where inmates were serving their jail term.
The comptroller in charge of the command confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jos.
He said the inmates revolted because of the announcement of a reduction in their food ration.
We gathered that the contractor in charge of providing food for the inmates can no longer supply it, following the increase in food prices across the country.
The prisoners became agitated and began to throw stones at officers on guard, and allegedly injured some officers in the process.
The armed squad of the command were deployed to quell the conflict.
Relevant authorities have been advised to act swiftly to prevent a reoccurrence of such incident.
