Insecurity: Ooni of Ife wants constitutional roles for monarchs
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Ade-yeye Ogun-wusi says traditional rulers need to be assigned constitutional roles in the security and governance architecture of the country, if it wants to tackle emerging and contemporary security challenges.
The Ooni spoke at the 2023 exercise Haski Hiyu lecture series, organised by the Armed Forces command and staff college, Jaji, Kaduna state.
He stressed that the failure of the security agencies and the government to assign specific constitutional roles to traditional rulers was largely responsible for the lingering insecurity in the country.
His call is not unconnected with the diverse security challenges facing the country across all the regions.
On Monday, gunmen whisked away 10 victims from Government Day Secondary School in Awon, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The abduction is the latest onslaught launched by gunmen that have wreaked havoc in the North-Western state despite the efforts of the state government and security agencies.
