Katsina Governor Urges Citizens to Bear Arms and Die as Martyrs in Self Defense

The Governor of Katsina State North-Western Nigeria, Aminu Bello Masari has officially authorized citizens of the State to carry arms and defend themselves against bandit attacks.

He made this statement during a media parley with journalists on Thursday at the Muhammadu Buhari House in Katsina stating that it was Islamically allowed for one to defend oneself, family, and assets; and If one was to die while trying to defend oneself, the person will be considered a martyr.

“If we are being attacked by foreign elements it is something different from the present situation where we are attacked by the sons of our neigbours”, he said.

Governor Masari said it is unfortunate how criminals get guns but good people do not have the means to protect themselves.

He said the state will support residents who are willing to procure weapons to defend themselves against attacks, saying ” it is not right for miscreants to carry weapons but citizens are not, allowing ourselves to be killed. Whoever is able to purchase weapons should do so to protect himself. Whosoever comes to us we will assist.”

Katsina has recorded a surge in the activities of bandits which has led to kidnappings and killings of residents.

The governor noted that the number of security operatives in the state is insufficient to protect the lives and properties of residents.

Meanwhile, Governor Masari has come under fire for calling on residents of the state to arm themselves and confront bandits because security officials alone cannot tackle insecurity in the state.
