Lagos State Speaker Obasa, others impeached
In a significant political shakeup, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing multiple statutory infractions and financial violations.
The former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, and representing Apapa Constituency 1 was elected to replace him as the new Speaker.
The Speaker had been under intense pressure in the last few weeks detailing Obasa’s alleged involvement in the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other questionable activities.
The decision to impeach Obasa signals a significant shift within the Lagos State House of Assembly, as lawmakers respond to allegations of corruption and financial impropriety.
The appointment of Lasbat Meranda, a seasoned legislator and former Chief Whip, suggests an effort to restore trust in the institution and ensure greater transparency in its operations.
Additionally, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Deputy Chief Whip, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
