Lawmaker urge youths toshun violence
The former Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly and doyen of a table tennis game in South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke has asked youths in Henshaw Town Community in Calabar South Local Government Area to enswue violence and acts of hooliganism in their actions.
Hon. Duke made the comment at the road construction site on Ekeng Abia street during a routine inspection on Tuesday October 4, 2022 to settle a rift between the aggressive youths who were demanding the lifting of top-soil rights with the contractor handling the Niger Delta Development Commission Project.
And after the disagreement, the C.L.O for the project, Chief O. Effanga settled for 60% payment to host community and 40% for each trip carried to other clients outside of the community.
In another development, a mysterious fire destroyed no less than six shops on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, in harbour business area of Calabar near the Mobile Police Squadron formation.
The strange fire which could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report is said to have started from a nearby shop involved in diesel business at about 3:pm.
Among the shops destroyed in the inferno include a mechanic shed, Point of Sales (POS), phone charging, and injector equipment shops that were razed before fire-fighters from the NNPC Calabar Depot in Esuk Utan tank farm arrived after frantic efforts from on-lookers to put it off.
An eyewitness narrated to the LENS reporter that a fuel tanker narrowly escaped from the scene as no casualty was recorded.
It would be recalled that in less than two months a section of the popular Ika Ika Oqua aka Marian Market was gutted by fire in the wee hours of Tuesday, August 30, 2022, and some residents of Essien street in Calabar South L.G.A counted their losses in a similar incidence when a strange fire destroyed their houses and rendered them homeless with no help yet from the State Emergency Management Agency- “SEMA”.
