NEMA distributes relief materials to 2022 flood victims in Cross River
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials to about 10,000 victims of the 2022 flood which ravaged parts of Cross River State.
The south south zonal coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Babatunde Razak Adeniyi, made this known during the second phase distribution of materials to beneficiaries in Calabar, disclosing that of the 10, 128 victims enumerated and accredited for collection of the materials in the state, NEMA was able to attend to over 8,000 beneficiaries during the first phase of distribution of relief materials in the state.
In the second phase of the exercise, he said NEMA was poised to distribute farm inputs to about 1,950 beneficiaries.
“We have distributed about 95 percent of the relief materials and are almost through, as we are rounding off and mopping up for other beneficiaries across the 18 local government areas of the state.”
According to him, the items including sewing and grinding machines, water pumping machines for irrigation farming, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticide, hybrid yam seedlings, rice crops and cassava cutting were distributed to affected persons.
The zonal coordinator who disclosed he was in the state as a supervisor for Special Maintenance Economic and Agro Emergency Intervention for flood victims of 2022, also said one of the challenges they had to contend with was the magnitude of the crowd occasioned by large scale forgery of the allocation slips.
However, he said with due diligence, he and his team were able to discover them so that the true beneficiaries were not shortchanged in the exercise.
Adeniyi, who advised on a change in lifestyle pattern of the people to forestall flooding, foresees a bumper harvest in the next farming season because the inputs were given at the right time.
The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency Director General (SEMA D.G) Rev. James Anam supported Adeniyi in presenting the relief materials at the event.
