NFF, Sports Ministry disagree over hiring of Peseiro as Super Eagles coach
The Nigeria Football Federation and Sports Ministry are yet to agree on the appointment of a new head coach for the Super Eagles.
The NFF is looking to appoint a new head coach (a foreigner) for the Super Eagles this month.
The soccer house has settled for Portuguese José Peseiro, but the Sports Ministry is not happy with the choice.
Three other candidates: Phillip Cocu, Laurent Blanc, and Ernesto Valverde were also shortlisted for the post.
The Sports Ministry want a level playing field for all the shortlisted coaches and has directed the NFF to invite them to Nigeria for an interview.
The NFF is however not willing to back down on its decision to hire the former Real Madrid assistant manager, Jose Peseiro.
Recall that the NFF had previously announced the 62-year-old as the new coach of the Super Eagles before contract negotiations broke down only a week after Augustine Eguavoen was put in charge on an interim basis following the sacking of Gernot Rohr a few months after in 2021.
Eguavoen stepped down from the Super Eagles’ interim coaching job immediately after Tunisia knocked Nigeria out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon warranting the search again for a substantive coach for the national team.
