Nigeria Army rescue kidnapped commissioner in Cross River
The kidnapped Cross River State Commissioner for Women Affairs have been rescued by troops of the 13 Infantry Brigade Nigerian Army in Calabar assigned the Anti-kidnapping task in the State aka “OPERATION AKPAKWU”.
The announcement of the rescue of Prof. (Mrs.) Gertrude Njar who had been in the kidnapper’s den was communicated Wednesday in a statement by Capt. Dorcas Aluko, the Army Public Relations Officer of the13 Infantry Brigade Nigerian Army.
Recall the Commissioner was kidnapped on February 1st 2023 along Mayne Avenue Axis of Calabar South Local Government Area in Cross River State.
The troops of the Army formation acting on intelligence on the victim’s location laid ambush around Peter Effiong Creek, Messembe, Jebs vicinity.
The APRO disclosed that the criminals abandoned the victim and fled into the creeks in the ensuing operation and the troops are on the trail of the fleeing criminals. The victim according to Aluko is currently receiving medical treatment as precursor to her discharge.
Earlier, women in Cross River State had led a protest during the International Women Day celebration in Calabar to commemorate the 35 days of incarceration of Associate Prof. Gertrude Nnangjar Njar, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs who was still in captivity as at Wednesday.
