Nigeria Customs fires 2,000 officers over corrupt practices
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed about 2,000 of its officers in the past seven years over corruption-related offenses.
Customs Comptroller-General, Hameed Ali, disclosed this when he featured in the media briefing coordinated by the Presidential Media Team on Thursday in Abuja.
Ali said the service “abhors corruption” and has zero tolerance for corrupt officials.
He disclosed that in addition to losing their jobs, some of those found wanting have been prosecuted and jailed.
According to Ali, many of those that have been shown the way out were found to be shortchanging the Service in its revenue drive, especially on import duties that should accrue to the organisation on imported vehicles.
The Customs boss also revealed that some importers found to have engaged in sharp practices that have negatively affected the NCS have been suspended from transacting with the service or have been prosecuted.
